- <p>In Vilanova i la Geltrú, carnival lasts for a full week. It starts on <strong>Fat Thursday</strong>, but things really get going with the eagerly awaited <strong>Arrival of His Majesty King <em>Carnestoltes</em></strong><em> </em>on the Friday. He makes his first appearance at some unconventional site in the city (which changes from year to year), from where he leads a <strong>parade of floats</strong>. When the parade reaches Plaça de la Vila (the main square), he gives the “<strong>Sermon</strong>”, which marks the start of a fun-packed festival that lasts until <strong>Ash Wednesday</strong>. So, if you’re planning on heading there, you’ve been warned: make sure you have plenty of energy!</p>
