It starts on <strong>Fat Thursday</strong>, but things really get going with the eagerly awaited <strong>Arrival of His Majesty King <em>Carnestoltes</em></strong><em> </em>on the Friday. He makes his first appearance at some unconventional site in the city (which changes from year to year), from where he leads a <strong>parade of floats</strong>. When the parade reaches Plaça de la Vila (the main square), he gives the “<strong>Sermon</strong>”, which marks the start of a fun-packed festival that lasts until <strong>Ash Wednesday</strong>. Since then, the <strong><em>Festa Major</em> (Main Town Festival)</strong> has been celebrated at the start of August. Vilanova i la Geltrú is filled with<strong> fire, dancing and human towers</strong> in a festival that is led by seven locals known as <strong>pabordes</strong>, to commemorate a mediaeval figure.
